The Spirit of Merit

[A poem by Mr. T.S.S. Murty titled ‘The Spirit of Merit’.]

Let’s bear in mind, Brother,
People often blurt out and not bother.

Living in the mud, a lotus
Is still chaste in its status;
Is its hue imbued by sludge
Or is it scared of any smudge?

Doesn’t honey happily dwell
In the harmful honeybee’s shell?
Does a basil plant lose its identity
If it sprouts among cannabis-majority?

The place and people might mock
Saying “you are known by the flock.”
However a person’s predicament is,
Should we be pleased to tease?

Do not judge anyone by the enveloped flavour
Each one has his own taste and fervour;
Comprehending this truth is clever,
As we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!
